New Expanded Edition of The Maker's Field Guide, "The No. 1 Book on Industrial Design" by Rain Noe

Industrial designer Christopher Armstrong is releasing an expanded edition of his book The Maker's Field Guide, billed as "The No. 1 book on industrial design." Judging by the trailer and images on the Kickstarter campaign page, I assume that refers primarily to the prototyping aspects of ID, and it appears that Armstrong certainly knows his stuff:

The book has been expanded from the original 2018 addition to include 30 pages on 3D printing.

The Maker's Field Guide has already been successfully Kickstarted, with $47,254 in pledges at press time on a $22,500 goal. There are still 3 days left to pledge.

How to Modify Your Apple Pencil to Have a Glossy but Grippy Texture, and a Sharper Tip for More Accurate Sketching by Rain Noe

If you've got an Apple Pencil and you find it too slippery, and the tip too crayon-like for your tastes, here industrial designer Eric Strebel shows you how he fixed both issues.

In the video he touches on a subject familiar to prototypers, where you often have to make a thing to help you make the other thing; he also leaves in some stuff going wrong on camera, so you can learn from it. (I always find that stuff incredibly helpful, as I feel like half of my time in my own shop is spent on fixing my own mistakes.)

Industrial Design Duo Creates Duvet Cover That's Easy to Get the Comforter In and Out of by Rain Noe

For the able-bodied among us, changing a duvet cover is merely a pain in the ass. For Luke Gray's aging grandmother, the task became impossible. Gray and friend Ben King--both of them industrial designers who'd worked together at Joseph Joseph--resolved to come up with something better.

That was two years ago, and now their Koa Cover design is ready for prime time:

The Koa Cover has been successfully Kickstarted, with $34,875 in pledges at press time on a $30,530 goal. If you're interested, there's still 27 days left to pledge.

After seeing so much megafunded technojunk lately, it's a relief to see two actual industrial designers humbly working to tackle a mundane but commonplace problem. I wish these guys the best!

3 Tips To Stay Motivated When Looking For a Design Job by Rain Noe

The best pieces of advice are always hard-won, and here Michael DiTullo starts when he was at the bottom: Just blew a shot at a dream job, forced to move in with his folks, can't get a job for months, and ready to accept a major indignity at the end of it.

Today DiTullo runs his own firm, and has seen twenty years of ups and downs. From these experiences he's distilled three excellent tips on what you should be doing when looking for a design job:

Pratt Institute Students Sue School for Tuition Refund, Claiming "Subpar" Online Classes by Rain Noe

According to Pratt Institute's website, Industrial Design students have been assigned to make those "Isolation Chairs" from last month…

…but apparently not everyone's thrilled with the curriculum. The Daily News reports that a group of undergraduate Pratt Institute students have brought a lawsuit against the school, demanding a tuition refund in the face of inadequate online instruction.

"The online learning options being offered to Pratt students are subpar in practically every aspect, from the lack of facilities, materials and access to faculty," a lawyer for the students wrote in the suit. "Students have been deprived of the opportunity for collaborative learning and in-person dialogue, feedback and critique."
…The Pratt Institute lawsuit argued that the university's design focus makes remote, online learning even less feasible for students.

I can't imagine how one would go about teaching Industrial Design from afar. If you're an ID student, whether at Pratt or elsewhere, please drop us a line in the comments--I'm intensely curious to hear how your online classes are going.
